Aaron Marcel McClain
2023 USTR Fellow | Master of Social Work, Boston College School of Social Work
Aaron (Marcel) McClain is a passionate and dedicated clinical social worker in training who is driven by a vision of liberation and empowerment for people from underserved backgrounds. Inspired by Resmaa Menakem’s work, Marcel envisions a world where individuals reconnect with their mind-body connection as a pathway to emotional and psychological liberation.
Currently in the final year of his master’s program at the Boston College School of Social Work, and as a 2023-24 RIZE Fellow, Marcel is dedicated to supporting people of color who are facing challenges related to substance use. He recognizes that substance use often stems from underlying traumas and is committed to providing culturally-relevant and affirming interventions. Marcel believes in empowering individuals to break free from addiction and find holistic healing.
In addition to his academic studies and commitment to supporting individuals, Marcel is actively engaged in community advocacy and organizing efforts. He believes in the power of grassroots movements to bring about systemic change and works tirelessly to amplify the voices and experiences of African-descendant communities. Marcel strives to challenge stigmatization and criminalization of substance use, advocating for more compassionate and comprehensive approaches to addiction.
With his impending graduation, Marcel is eager to bring his knowledge, passion, and expertise to his future work as a trauma-informed and Afrocentric social worker. He envisions a career focused on supporting individuals and communities in reclaiming their strengths, self-determination, and ancestral wisdom. Marcel’s ultimate goal is to contribute to a world where healing is central, liberation is realized, and marginalized communities are empowered to thrive.
